How to peel a tomatoe

So why do you want to peel a tomato, you ask? Because tomato skins won't resolve while cooking but stay tough, people don't like the texture of their sauce or soup.

Not only soups and pasta recipes benefit from this technique. I also peel my tomatoes when I'm making tomato salsa or bruschetta.

Step 1

Add water to a large pot and bring it to a boil. Prepare the tomatoes by cutting a shallow X on the bottom of each tomato using a sharp paring knife.

Step 2

Lower the tomatoes in the boiling water and let them sit in hot water for about 30-60 seconds until the skin starts to crack. Take them out of the pot and place them into the ice water.

Step 3

Let them cool a little and peel off the skin. That's it!

Storage tips

Peeled tomatoes will keep for about 3 days in the fridge. If you want to store them down a longer period I recommend freezing them.
