Oat flour is a whole grain flour made from oats. It has a slightly nutty flavor and is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

The dietary fiber keeps you satiated for a long time, which is a significant advantage over all-purpose flour, which contains few fibers.

Gluten-free oat flour

Oats are also naturally gluten-free, making this a perfect flour to bake with if you do not tolerate gluten. Make sure that the oatmeal you use has not been in contact with gluten in the production process.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to replace flour 1:1, but you can find more and more recipes specifically for other flours.

Because oat flour is still not always readily available and, quite frankly, very expensive, I prefer to make oat flour myself.

Ingredients

Oats - I use rolled oats because it is cheap, you can get it everywhere, and because it is a bit softer, it takes less time to turn into flour.

If you use other types of oats than rolled oats, it often takes a little longer.

Instructions

To make your own oat flour, add your oats to a food processor and pulse it until you have a fine powder. You could also do this in a blender or even with a hand blender.

Sometimes, it is necessary to stir the oats halfway through so that everything is ground up.

Self-rising oat flour is made by adding one teaspoon of baking powder to 5 cups or 500 grams of oat flour.

In case there are still some larger pieces left, it is best to pass your oat flour through a sieve.

Coarse pieces you can grind again or use as a topping for cupcakes, for example.

How to use oat flour

You can use this type of flour for almost anything you normally use wheat flour for. Because it does not contain gluten, I do not recommend using it for bread or pizza.

Equipment

  • Food processor - it goes without saying, but of course, you will need a food processor, blender, hand blender with a chopper, or coffee grinder to grind the oats.
  • A sieve to get the last coarse bits out.
  • I usually use a weck jar to store my flour. That way, no moisture gets in, and it stays good longer.

Storage

Like flour and oats, you can store oat flour for a long time. In an airtight container, it will stay good for at least 3-6 months.
