Broccoli is a versatile vegetable, and it is also very healthy! This green vegetable is full of vitamin C and beta-carotene, which is good for your immune system.

Of course, you can serve this vegetable with potatoes and meat, but you can do much more with it! Besides soup, think of a salad or make a healthy pesto with it.

You can also use the stem of the broccoli in recipes. I prefer to use it when I make broccoli soup, but you can also turn the stalk into a dip or broccoli rice!

Broccoli is also a great side for red pesto pasta, pan-seared salmon, and garlic parmesan risotto.

Broccoli puree for baby

Since this vegetable is neutral in flavor and full of vitamins, it is also great, especially steamed, as the first meal for your baby.

Cook the vegetable for six minutes until completely tender, and puree it with a stick blender. If necessary, add some cooking water if the puree becomes too dry.

How long to boil broccoli

Broccoli is cooked al dente in a few minutes. This way, more vitamins are retained, and it's much healthier!

Fill a large pan with water and a pinch of salt, and bring the water to a boil.

Cut the broccoli into florets and wash them in a colander. You can also eat the stalk! Cut it into small pieces and cook with them or incorporate them into a soup.

Add the florets to the boiling water and cook the broccoli for about 4 minutes until al dente. For softer broccoli, cook the florets 1-2 minutes longer. You can prick the broccoli with a fork to feel if they are cooked.

Drain the broccoli and serve while still warm.

How to steam broccoli

You can steam broccoli like green beans to preserve even more vitamins and color.

Cut the broccoli into florets and add some water to the pan. Put the florets in a steamer basket and place it in the pan.

Bring the water to a boil and allow it to steam for 5-6 until the broccoli is tender. Make sure there is always a layer of water in the pan.

Remove the florets from the steamer basket and serve immediately.

Equipment

  • You will need a spacious pan and possibly a steamer basket for cooking.
  • A colander to drain the broccoli.

Storage

Cooked broccoli will keep in the fridge for about 2-3 days.

Broccoli is also suitable for freezing! The broccoli will stay fresh for up to six months in the freezer.
